Good conditions

Within the framework of the statutory rules laid down by the Swiss government, the government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt endeavours to safeguard the sustained prosperity of the population. The economic development policies pursued by the canton do not intervene actively in the economy, but instead focus on creating and maintaining Basel's status as an attractive place to do business.

Strengthening the strengths

The local economy is in a very good position. The important branches of trade all have a promising future, and Basel will remain an attractive location. A dynamic economic promotion focusing on the strengths of the area is essential and an integral part of Basel’s economic policy. Hence the Canton of Basel-Stadt focuses on the important branches of trade and leading companies. By strengthening the strengths, Basel will become more attractive to specialised businesses. The Canton of Basel-Stadt expressly recognises Basel's position as an acknowledged centre of research and production excellence for the life sciences industries. Training and research facilities in this field receive particular encouragement. Other key sectors supported by the canton include the finance and insurance sector, logistics, the creative industries as well as the chemical industries.

Basel offers a full range of services to companies which are not yet represented in the canton itself: BaselArea, Economic Promotion, and the Office of Economy and Labour of Basel-Stadt both help companies with whatever issues may arise.

Industry and trade associations also offer a broad range of services to companies in Basel. Their interests are represented by the "Gewerbeverband Basel-Stadt" (Basel-Stadt Association of Small and Medium Size Enterprises) and the "Handelskammer beider Basel" (Basel Area Chamber of Commerce) as well as the "Basler Volkswirtschaftsbund" (Basel Economics Association).

i-net Basel: networking for innovation

i-net BASEL is part of the Basel cantonal economic development programme which aims, among other things, to offer companies from selected technology sectors above-average conditions compared with competitor locations in Switzerland and abroad. i-net BASEL supports and accelerates innovations in future technologies: currently, nanotechnology, greentech and communications technologies. i-net BASEL provides a neutral, professionally-managed platform through which researchers, developers, suppliers and customers are brought together. All parties involved are given an opportunity to actively participate in the development of innovative solutions. Suppliers get to know about market requirements, while customers gain direct access to the latest developments. Through the activities of i-net BASEL, research and development potential in the Basel region is better exploited.
