Safe...

Switzerland
and Basel
have one of the lowest crime rates anywhere in the world. Residents accordingly feel very safe in their
city. Police stations are located throughout the city. Police patrols pass regularly
through all neighbourhoods.
Community policing is very common, and officers regularly work in schools for crime prevention or to
teach children the rules of traffic.

Public refuse bins and collection points for waste are available
throughout the city. For household waste, you need to buy a special waste bag that includes the charge
for disposal. These „Bebbisäcke“ are available in all grocery stores and supermarkets. Household waste
is collected twice weekly. Full bags are put out on the street the evening before.
For
larger items of waste, a special sticker is needed, the so called ‘Abfallvignette’ (domestic refuse
vignette), available in all grocery stores. People in Basel are encouraged to recycle waste as much
as possible: Paper and metals must be disposed of separately. Both are collected from households free
of charge. Glass, tins and PET bottles must be brought to the free collection points. For organic kitchen
waste there are community compost centres almost everywhere. Larger objects (e.g. electronic equipment)
can be returned to retailers for disposal.
