Bicycles
Basel
is considered one of the most bicycle friendly cities in Europe. A clearly-marked network of dedicated
routes and paths criss-cross both the city itself as well as the surrounding region. An impressive underground
parking at the SBB-station offers space for more than 1’000 bicycles. Bicycles with electric auxiliary
motors, inline skates, skateboards, kickboards and scooters are frequently seen; dedicated rinks and
parks are available for keen users. Special route maps are also available for cyclists (for sale in
bookshops and kiosks). Bicycles need a registration vignette that can be bought at kiosks, post offices
and in many grocery stores.
Traffic
calming
In most residential areas, the speed limit is 30 km/h. In
some streets, so called meeting zones have been defined, where the speed limite is just 20 km/h. In
these roads, pedestrians have a general right of way. More.
Parking
In
the city centre, there is a car-park routeing system. In residential areas, there are blue parking spots
(with limited parking time) and white parking spots (unlimited free parking). Residents can buy a parking
ticket that allows them unlimited parking in the blue zones. More.
Cars
The
local “Motorfahrzeugkontrolle” (English MOT) issues the registration for new vehicles and periodically
checks all registered cars. This office also transfers cars to a new owner or issues the parking tickets
for residents. A car tax is obligatory for all cars and motorcycles. More.
Carsharing
Mobility Carsharing offers a whole new system of driving: All over the country, there are many red cars of all sizes. Mobility members can book a car at very short notice, for just an hour or several days. Access to the cars is granted via an electronic chip card. After the defined period, the car has to be returned to its parking spot that is always free. There is no additional cost, and all repairs are handled by Mobility.
