University Hospital
The University Hospital Basel is one of Switzerland's leading university medical centres. It offers treatment in all medical fields, but specialises in transplantations, care for cardiovascular patients, multiple sclerosis and HIV therapy, as well as running a state of the art maternity clinic. As in other medical disciplines, specialists for oncology offer surgical and non-surgical treatments for all types of tumours. The University Hospital has one of the largest urological clinics in Switzerland.
University Children's Hospital of the two Basels
The University Children’s Hospital of the two Basels is an independent, university centre of excellence for child and adolescent medicine. It has been located at the Spitalstrasse 33 in Basel since the beginning of 2011, and replaced the two existing sites on the Bruderholz (BL) and at the Römergasse 8 (BS). The Basel Children's Hospital ensures the best possible holistic care and treatment and care of the sick children according to age and development.
Private hospitals
A number of private hospitals also offer medical services. The largest are St. Claraspital, Merian-Iselin Hospital and Bethesda Hospital. The largest medical centre in the neighbouring Canton of Basel-Landschaft is Bruderholzspital, which is used by many people from Basel. Old people's homes and nursing homes
More than 40 old people's homes and nursing homes are distributed throughout Basel-Stadt, while specialist organisations offer home-care services. Some 60 ambulance staff are always on duty, and can be called up using the emergency telephone number 144.
Emergency pharmacy
The emergency pharmacy at Petersgraben 3 (opposite the university hospital) is always open outside regular opening hours.
Opening hours of the emergency pharmacy: Monday to Friday, 6.30 p.m. to 8 a.m., Saturday from 4 p.m. through to Monday, 8 a.m., as well as on all public holidays.
Railway station pharmacy Wenger
Is located in the SBB Railway Station by tracks 1 – 4, and is open 365 days a year from 7.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.
