Health
The health system in
the Canton of Basel-Stadt provides a very high standard
of care in every respect: A large number of state-run and private-sector hospitals, as well as old people's
homes and nursing homes provide treatment, health care and support for injured, ill and elderly patients,
private doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies leave no gaps in the system.
University
Hospital
The University Hospital Basel
is one of Switzerland's leading university medical centers. It offers treatment in all medical fields,
but specialises in transplantations, care for cardiovascular patients, multiple sclerosis and HIV therapy,
and runs a state of the art maternity clinic.
Private hospitals
A
number of private hospitals also offer medical services. The largest are St. Claraspital,
Merian-Iselin Hospital and Bethesda Hospital.
Some 700 doctors of all specialist
fields provide medical services around the clock. The largest medical centre in the neighbouring Canton
of Basel-Landschaft is Bruderholzspital, which
is used by many people from Basel.
Old people's homes and
nursing homes
More than 40 old people's homes and nursing homes are
distributed throughout Basel-Stadt, while specialist organisations offer home-care
services. Some 60 ambulance staff are always on duty, and can be called up under
the emergency telephone number 144.
Emergency pharmacy
The
emergency pharmacy at Petersgraben 3 (opposite of the university hospital) is always open outside regular
opening hours.
Opening hours of the emergency pharmacy: Monday to Friday,
6.30pm to 8am, Saturday as
of 4pm running through Monday, 8am, as well as on all public holidays.
