Trinational Shopping

It is quite unique: Within just an hour, you can get a sausage in Germany, a bottle of wine in France, and your favourite chocolate in Switzerland. Shopping is fun!

City centre

Most retail stores are located in the city centre, between Aeschenplatz in Grossbasel and Claraplatz in Kleinbasel. There are more shops along Spalenberg up to Lyss. The longest shopping street is ‘Freie Strasse’, Basel’s top retail address. It starts at historic Marktplatz, where Basel’s Town Hall as well as the cantonal seat of government and parliament are located. In most shops you can also pay with the so called “Pro Innerstadt Cheques”.

Shopping advantage border location

One of the key advantages of shopping in the border region are the price differences between the three countries. Each country has its own price advantages – which adds to the fun of shopping in the region! For this reason the major shopping centres on the other side of the border in France and Germany are very popular amongst the residents of Basel. But remember: certain customs restrictions remain in force on the national borders around Basel.

«I especially like the small, creative design studios. You always meet interesting people with new ideas there. I also love the many thrift shops where I always find some original object for my flat. And for some good wine or cheese, I just drive over the border to France.» Anna Dreykluft, German, architect
