Where science drives business
Research for its own sake is desirable and effective at university level. Universities of Applied Science, by contrast, concentrate on practical applications. The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) pursues and pragmatic research objectives focused on application in many diverse fields. The Swiss economy is more than ever dependent upon this approach. For this reason, the modern and well-equipped Office of Technology Transfer jointly run Basel University and the University of Applied Sciences plays a key role. It provides researchers with support in finding commercial applications for their results and ensures that the exchange with the business community is legally correct and fair to both sides. And of course, this environment offers the global pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Roche, the agrochemical company Syngenta, or the companies Ciba Specialty Chemicals and Clariant an ideal operating environment where they can thrive and grow. The new “Novartis Campus of Knowledge” is an excellent point in case.
