Good reasons for Basel
Basel
is one of the most successful economic regions in the world. Two of the world’s five largest pharmaceutical
companies – Novartis and Roche – were founded in Basel and also have their headquarters here. The life
sciences cluster centered around Basel includes both multinationals and large companies as well as numerous
small and medium-sized companies. Other branches of trade have contributed to Basel’s international
reputation: Trade and transport, finance and insurance, IT, design and architecture. They have all created
countless exciting jobs and attracted many highly skilled people from all over the world.
Companies
are able to take advantage of well trained and highly motivated employers and employees here in Basel
– more so than elsewhere. Tens of thousands of Germans and French employees cross the borders daily
in order to work in Basel and profit from excellent working conditions: high wages, low deductions,
low taxes and good social security.
Switzerland’s liberal legislation
ensures a labor market that functions well. The excellent standards of training and highly motivated
employees as well as the relatively low social costs when compared to the rest of Europe make for high
productivity. The working hours are among the longest in Europe, 40 to 42,5 hours per week. The local
authorities cooperate and employers work well together. All this makes Basel an attractive place to
live and work.
