Registration and Administration

A new job, a new home and maybe a new country always raises many questions. Below, you will find an answer to the most important ones.

Moving to Basel from another Swiss canton or from another country - in both cases you should report to the Residents Registration Office of the Canton of Basel-Stadt as fast as possible, in order to have the necessary formalities done. Changes of address must be reported within 8 days. You should bring two passport pictures and your visa. Residents of non-EU countries should also report to their respective embassy or consulate. Newcomers to Basel receive a comprehensive information package upon registration. Some neighbourhoods organise special welcoming parties for newcomers.

Change of address

When moving house within Basel, you must inform the Residents Registration Office of your new address within 8 days. If you move to another canton, the same procedure applies there.

Residence permits

Newcomers must report to the "Einwohnerdienste" (Residents Registration Office) within 8 days of entering Switzerland. Once this has been done, employees are generally issued a so-called "Aufenthaltsbewilligung B" (residence permit class B). EU citizens with employment contracts exceeding one year have to renew their residence permit every 5 years. Non-EU citizens need to renew it every year.
