32nd Rhine Swim

Down the “creek” together! The 32nd official Rhine swim is taking place on the 14th August 2012. The meeting point is the Kleinbasel bank of the Rhine by the Schaffhauserrheinweg 93, just before 6.00 p.m. Everyone will enter the water at 6 p.m., and – accompanied by boats and rescue swimmers – will head down the Rhine. You can float past the beautiful backdrop of the city centre of Basel, and can leave the water again at the Leuengasse/Johanniter Bridge. The alternative date is the 21st August 2012.

When swimming in the Rhine you should be careful to always stay on the Klein Basel side of the river, and to ensure that there is several metres separation when passing the pillars of the bridges. It is recommended to wear water shoes to avoid cuts. Air beds and flotation devices are not permitted on the river.

Accompanied Rhine swimming

The Sports Office of the Department of Education carries out accompanied Rhine swimming every Tuesday in the summer months of July and August. This service is aimed at confident swimmers of any age, and is free of charge. Participants can meet in the Solitude Park below the Tinguely Museum on Tuesdays up to 6.00 p.m. The exit from the Rhine is before the Wettstein Bridge.

Registration by telephone to 061 267 57 26 is required between 9.30 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. on the day of the event. It is recommended to wear solid water shoes (surf shoes, trekking sandals or light gym shoes). Clothes can be deposited at the entrance location.
