Promoting Basel around the world
At
the beginning of the year 2000, Basel set up a Marketing unit, aiming at promoting Basel around the
world. The marketing activities focus on the three areas of communications/PR, residential promotion
and events. The main target groups are companies, event organizers, tourists, the local population and
potential new citizens. Since 2007, the Marketing unit is also responsible for the official city partnerships
with Shanghai and Massachusetts.
Communications/PR
To
make Basel's strengths more widely known, an image campaign is continuously run,
supported by Basel's business community and the canton of Basel-Stadt. The campaign's aim is to communicate
what makes Basel especially attractive. The Division External Affairs and Marketing also publishes several
brochures and leaflets to promote Basel, liaises with the media, runs the website www.basel.ch
and organizes
high profile events. The image campaign is targeted on Germany, the main export partner of Switzerland.
After three years of heavy campaigning in Berlin and three years in Düsseldorf, the focus is on Hamburg
from 2007 to 2009.
Events
Event
Services is the central point of reference for major events within
the local administration. Organizers of the most important events in Basel get unbureaucratic advice
and assistance. One focus is to help organizers obtaining the necessary permissions to stage events.
Furthermore, Event Sercies welcomes foreign guests during major events in Basel. Basel intends to become
Switzerlands prime location for events of all kinds.
Residential
promotion
Potential newcomers are the target group of this sub-sections activity, encouraging them to make Basel their home. In cooperation with major employers, it offers information about Basel and provides advisory services to people who are thinking of moving here.
