Architecture Day, August 8
On August 8, 2010 – exactly two years after the opening of the ‘Birds Nest’ National Stadium in Peking constructed by Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron – Basel presents itself at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai as a city of architecture. A specialist exchange program between Swiss and Chinese architects was organized in partnership with Hong Kong University.
Design Day, August 9
Students on the ‘Master Studio Design’ course at the University of Applied Sciences North Western Switzerland present their projects in the three Swiss cities pavilion. The projects dealt with themes such as communication or cultural diversity, and thus made an important contribution to the creative exchange between Basel and Shanghai.
City Development and Planning Day, August 10
In the context of the city twinning initiative, political and specialist representatives from Basel and Shanghai and Basel architects take part in a specialist exchange program on the themes of urban and spatial planning, and visit the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum together.
City Partnership Day, August 11: signing of MoU 2011-2013
State councillor Dr. Hans-Peter Wessels and Shanghai’s deputy mayor SHEN Jun sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the years 2011 to 2013 in the presence of the President of the Parliament Annemarie von Bidder and the Swiss Consul General.
City Partnership Day, August 11: concert by the Basel Symphony Orchestra
The concert performed by the Basel Symphony Orchestra provides a fitting ending to the day on which the new MoU was signed. The gala event in the Shanghai Concert Hall also marks the beginning of Swiss Day at the World Expo. Swiss Federal President Doris Leuthard is present as guest of honor.

The Swiss City Joint Pavilion’s Swiss Day event at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai – a momentous celebration featuring diverse and colorful elements of Swiss culture – is marked by the visitation of a delegation of Swiss governement officials.
