City partners exchange information and their managers

The ‘Manager Exchange Programme’ for young individuals in leadership positions plays an important role in the lively and diverse relationships between the city partners of Basel and Shanghai. For the first time, four young managers from Shanghai came to Basel to pay a professional and cultural visit in May 2009. In 2010, it was the turn of the young managers from Basel: four young managers widened their professional horizons in the Chinese metropolis. After a pilot phase, this exchange of young managers will be intensified and extended from 2011 onwards.

The response to the first exchange from 2009 to 2010 is extremely positive: the guests from Shanghai are generally enthralled by their stay in Basel. The professional knowledge acquired and the accompanying business school attendance was much appreciated, as well as the experience of cultural differences.

Due to the good experiences made, the programme will be continued as a joint project of the External Affairs and Marketing Division, the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the Shanghai Economic Management College and the Shanghai Municipal Government Foreign Affairs Office. As a result, managers from Shanghai will again visit Basel in the autumn of 2011, with people from Basel travelling to Shanghai in September/October of 2012.

Manageraustausch

Becoming familiar with the foreign culture on the basis of professional experience

In May 2010, the first group of young managers from the Basel region travelled to Shanghai. This represented a unique opportunity to get to know and understand an unfamiliar professional world and a different culture! The 2010 Basel exchange visit to Shanghai lasted around eight weeks. After an introductory week, the four managers from Basel spent six weeks working for Chinese corporations before finally enjoying a week of leisure in China. The four young professionals are employed by Basel’s transport services, Basel’s Congress Center, the Environment and Energy Authority, and the Commerce and Employment Authority of the Canton of Basel city. During their stay in Shanghai, they worked with the corresponding Chinese organisations.

Participants from private enterprise desirable

Both the sending and the hosting organisations set up agreements governing the requirements of the organisations regarding the participants. The 2011-2013 MoU also covers continuation of the exchange programme which is to be established on a long-term basis. The number of participants is to be increased, and additional private companies are to be acquired for the exchange programme.
