A Mid-Autumn Festival for Basel
Monday, September 12, 2011, on and around the Münsterplatz

During the Mid-Autumn Festival Basel 2011, the Münsterplatz has been transformed into a Chinese People’s Garden. In addition to culinary specialities, various musical and dance presentations from China were awaiting the public. There has also been the opportunity to actively find out more about the Middle Kingdom through offers such as Tai Chi, playing Chinese instruments or calligraphy on asphalt and paper.

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival represents the variety and richness of Chinese culture while simultaneously making an exchange of ideas possible with the Chinese population in the Basel area. The relations with China that have been created through the City Partnership with Shanghai will be deepened further.

After the completion of the renovation work, the Museum der Kulturen (Ethnological Museum) has been celebrating its re-opening with a special programme week from September 7 - 12 (details on www.mkb.ch).

The opening programme was concluded together with the Mid-Autumn Festival Basel 2011 organised by the Department of Presidential Affairs of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Programme/Poster of the Mid-Autumn Festival Basel 2011

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

According to the traditional Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th moon month, or, in other words, in the autumn towards the end of September. In addition to the Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional holidays in China.

Traditionally, moon cakes with various fillings, e.g. sweet, salty, with meat or vegetarian, are eaten at the Mid-Autumn Festival. On the evening of the festival, relatives or friends sit down together at a round table to eat and admire the moon.
Events with varying customs are being organised worldwide for the Mid-Autumn Festival and there are many mythological stories in existence regarding the Mid-Autumn Festival.
