Basel-Stadt has entered official city partnerships with Shanghai, Massachusetts and Miami Beach. The canton also invests in development cooperation with third world countries. Through the alliance with the French and German neighbours, Basel also has a chance to participate in many European programmes, especially in the alpine region and in northwestern Europe.
